Genetic Variation and Immune System Evolution

چکیده
Despite, or perhaps because of, the fact that fruit flies spend much of their lives surrounded by microbes, they do not readily succumb to infectious disease. For nearly fifteen years, Drosophila melanogaster has been a fruitful model system for studying the molecular genetics of innate immunity (Fig. 1). This year, studies of infection and immunity featured prominently in several sessions during the 49th Annual Drosophila Research Conference, sponsored by the Genetics Society of America and held in San Diego last April. The breadth of the presentations was a testament to progress in the study of immunity in fruit flies, with research presentations considering not only the molecular biology of cellular and humoral immunity, but also the maintenance of natural genetic variation in immune competence, physiological correlates of immunity, and pathogen virulence mechanisms and interactions with host flies. Furthermore, the complete genome sequencing of 12 species of Drosophila last year1 allowed the presented work to spill outside of melanogaster and include other Drosophila species.

Estimating Genetic and Maternal Effects Determining Variation in Immune Function of a Mixed-Mating Snail
Evolution of host defenses such as immune function requires heritable genetic variation in them. However, also non-genetic maternal effects can contribute to phenotypic variation, thus being an alternative target for natural selection. We investigated the role of individuals' genetic background and maternal effects in determining immune defense traits (phenoloxidase and antibacterial activity o...
متن کاملT Cell Adaptive Immunity Proceeds through Environment-Induced Adaptation from the Exposure of Cryptic Genetic Variation
Evolution is often characterized as a process involving incremental genetic changes that are slowly discovered and fixed in a population through genetic drift and selection. However, a growing body of evidence is finding that changes in the environment frequently induce adaptations that are much too rapid to occur by an incremental genetic search process. Rapid evolution is hypothesized to be f...

Candida species are medically significant yeast that can cause different infection ranging from mild mucosal to disseminated infection. Invasive and sever mucosal infections are often life threatening disorders, especially in immunocompromised hosts due to immunodeficiency either in adaptive or innate immunity which are susceptible to candidiasis. Nevertheless, not all of them are susceptible t...
متن کاملThe genetic architecture of immune defense and reproduction in male Bombus terrestris bumblebees.
Understanding the architecture of genetic variation, that is the number, effect, location, and interaction, of genes responsible for phenotypic variability in nature is important for the understanding of microevolutionary processes. In this study, we have used a quantitative trait loci (QTL) approach to uncover the genetic architecture of fitness-relevant traits associated with reproduction and...
متن کاملVariation in MHC genotypes in two populations of house sparrow (Passer domesticus) with different population histories
Small populations are likely to have a low genetic ability for disease resistance due to loss of genetic variation through inbreeding and genetic drift. In vertebrates, the highest genetic diversity of the immune system is located at genes within the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). Interestingly, parasite-mediated selection is thought to potentially maintain variation at MHC loci even i...
متن کاملCharacterization of the Full Length Coat Protein Gene of Iranian Grapevine fanleaf virus isolates, genetic variation and phylogenetic analysis
The full-length coat protein gene of Grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV) isolates from Iran was characterized byreverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RTPCR) and sequencing. The expected 1515 bp coatprotein (CP) gene amplicon was obtained for 16 isolates out of 89 that were identified by double antibodysandwich enzyme-linked immunesorbent assay (DASELISA) in a population ...
